Boxer Arturo Gatti’s Wife Being Held for Murder

After former NFL superstar Steve McNair was murdered by his girlfriend earlier this month, another sports icon might have been killed by a woman he loved.

Arturo Gatti, 37, a world famous boxer who retired in 2007, was found dead Saturday in his Rio de Janeiro vacation home. Now, authorities are holding his wife, Amada Rodrigues, 23, as the prime and only suspect. They believe she choked him to death with her purse strap, according to the Associated Press.

Rodrigues was the first person to find her dead husband but was then detained after police found several inconsistencies in her interrogation, according to ESPN. She said that she and Gatti had been in a minor altercation but then there was a mysterious 10 hour window between that and when she reported him dead. Several blood stains were found around the room and their 1-year-old son was unharmed.

The Canadian boxer was a fan favorite over his 16 year career, winning two championships and being in several major bouts that were epitomized by fast paced action. In 1995 he won the IBF junior lightweight title and in 2004 he won the WBC junior welterweight title. He retired in 2007 after losing a few fights in a row, including one to Alfonso Gomez, who became a star on the former TV show “The Contender.”
